2017 Tournament Report

Webster Lake - Jun. 3, 2017

Fred’s winning ways continue on Webster

Avid visited Webster for the first time in a couple of years, and with the cool, mixed up spring no one really knew what to expect. Would the fish still be on beds? Would they be in a postspawn funk? What would the weather be like? And so on.

As it turned out, those that prefished found precious few spawning fish and, those that were left on beds were on the small side. Anglers would end up relying on whatever their Plan B was to pattern fish on tournament day.

The evening before tournament day was cold (mid 40s) and the wind direction shifted from the previous day, but water temps held in the mid 60s for the day with a gusty 10 mph NNW wind that kicked up at midday.

There wasn’t much of a reaction bite, even after the wind picked up to put a chop on the water; the order of the day seemed to be plastics fished s-l-o-w.

The fish that fell for baits—and there were a lot of them—were mostly on the small side, at about 1-1.25 lbs. Most larger fish (as in over 2 lbs) showed clear signs of having been spawned out so our event was just a little late to see some more impressive weights.

But apparently either not ALL fish had spawned out or some had time to recover from an early spawn. There were a handful of nice lunkers weighed, including 3 in the 4.5+ range, and the event lunker went to Bill Wright with 5.13 largemouth.

As mentioned above, there were lots of fish caught: 12 of 14 anglers caught limits. The biggest belonged to Fred Naymie at 14.12 lbs. The second place limit came in at 12.35 lbs. and went to Paul Carvalho. John Shpack captured third place with 5 fish weighing 10.95 lbs.

Next up is Long Pond Lakeville just two weeks away.
