Medeiros With the Win at Watuppa

South Watuppa was more generous than usual for us this time around. Our previous 4 events had an average winning weight of just 7.34 lbs. But Saturday’s first place bag more than doubled that, as Jon Medeiros took the win with a weight of 15.36 lbs. The average weight per fish was up considerably for this tournament too; in previous events it averaged just 1.48 lbs., while on Saturday it was 2.27 lbs.

Overall, the weather was very nice. After a slightly chilly start with some low clouds and fog, the sun shone by about 9 am. and temps were in the 60s by noon. The wind was light all day.

By day’s end, water temps were at about 60 degrees so the fish no doubt had spawning on their minds and must have had the feedbag on. Many anglers reported catches on reaction baits in shallow water—though no one reported seeing any spawning activity.

At the scale, behind Jon in second place was Fred Naymie with his 14.22 lbs. In third was coangler Nick Mulcahy whose limit weighed at 13.21 lbs. The Lunker award went to Paul Carvalho whose hefty largemouth tipped the scale at 4.35 lbs. Overall, there were 54 fish weighed, but only 4 of them were smallmouth.
