Webster is Good to Everyone, But Best to Femiak

Avid Anglers opened our 2011 season with a late summer contest on Webster Lake. The weather was mostly overcast for the entire day and it was a little cool, even for mid-September. Water temps were around 70 degrees. For a change, the wind barely blew all day, which made for pretty comfortable fishing. All in all, it seemed like a great day to be on the water and we all expected some pretty decent bags. The only problem was that somebody forgot to tell the fish.

As it turned out Bill Wright and Eric Femiak battled it out for the top spot, with each of them toting bags to the scales that were in the 11.5 pound range. In the end it was Eric who prevailed—by a mere eleven hundreths of an ounce—even despite receiving a one quarter pound dead fish penalty. His winning weight was 11.64 pounds of largemouth and smallmouth, compared to Bill’s 11.53 smallmouth limit. Rounding out the top finishers was Mark Donovan with a mixed 8.74 pound sack. Fred Naymie took home lunker honors with one of the day’s few bigger fish, a nice 4.25 pound largemouth.

Only 6 limits were recorded from the 15 anglers in attendance, and it was remarkable how many small, make that really small, bass everyone reported catching. There is plenty of forage for the big bass and toothy critters that inhabit the lake. But, despite the apparent shortage of keeper bass, no one was shut out.

Our next tournament will be at Barton’s Cove on October 2. It’s the final event of the calendar year.
