Wequaquet - Sep. 22, 2012
The day dawned cold and damp. There was a light mist hanging in the early gray light. Sleepy outboards idled quietly as seagulls screetched and dove out on the lake's open water. 15 anglers waited patiently in boats for the cry of a number to cut the still morning air. A sculling team stroked their way along the far shore. Then:
"One!"
With great urgency engines roared to life, one after another.
"Four!"
Boats darted across the lake in all directions.
"Six!"
The lake had come alive!
"Eleven!"
The contest had begun!
Not two minutes later twelve boats and their anglers had scattered across the waters of Wequaquet Lake to fish secret honey holes with secret lures. The lake had returned, more or less, to its former idyllic self.
---------------
After that, you can only guess what went on on each boat. One thing is for sure: Wequaquet made it a struggle for every boat but one on September 22, 2012. A couple of days of cool weather, combined with two different fronts and changing wind directions, gave the fish lockjaw. What little bite there was was pretty much finished by midday as the skies brightened and the sun was out by about 1:30.
When the day was done it was Fred Naymie's boat that brought home the bacon. Fred caught the only limit of the event, 12.34 pounds worth. His co-angler, Nick Mulcahy, finished in second place with two fish for 8.24 pounds, a better-than-4-lb average. Nick caught the event's lunker, a 4.88 largemouth. Fred's biggest fish was also over four pounds so they were consistently on the bigger fish. In third plce was Paul Carvalho, with 4 fish for 7.05 pounds.
Wequaquet has proven to be difficult on the few occasions we've visited it in the Fall and this visit was no exception. In all, only 37 fish were weighed. Our next tournament is at South Watuppa on October 20.
