Paul Weighs Another Huge Harwich Bag to Seal a Win

It’s becoming old hat when Paul Carvalho is proclaimed the winner at our club tournaments, as he was again on Saturday at Long Pond Harwich. The win was his third in a row (ties a club record), and fifth out of the last 6 club events. He’s won all three of our 2014 tournaments. The average weight of those 5 winning bags? 15.75 lbs! During that string, he set a new club record at Harwich for heaviest bag and Saturday came within 5 ounces of matching the old club record he'd just broken less a year earlier. Needless to say, Mr. Carvalho OWNS Long Pond Harwich.

The weather is usually the hot button topic at Harwich and it was no exception this time. The day started with winds howling out of the south at about 20mph (with gusts to 40!) and showers. Needless to say, the place was rockin' and rollin' on the open water and windward shorelines. Luckily the rain was intermittent and not particularly heavy or it would have been miserable. It all cleared off and calmed down around noon and the afternoon was downright pleasant.

The guys who did well found the bedding fish, and the clearing weather certainly helped the sight fishing. Several anglers had their fish early and were able to work on upgrades throughout the day as conditions improved. Both largemouth and smallmouth appeared to be on beds, though perhaps not as many as expected for this late in the season.

Among those who did well, Fred Naymie claimed second place with a limit of five smallmouth that weighed 16.50 lbs. Fred narrowly beat out John Shpack’s limit of 16.28 lbs., which landed him in third place. John’s limit included three nice largemouth, the only green fish of the tournament. In addition to claiming first place, Paul also took home the lunker award with a 4.06 smallmouth.
